Cisco: to modernise TIM's network ahead of 5G.

(CercleFinance.com) - Cisco is going to modernise TIM's optical network, which aggregates accesses to fixed, mobile and company lines, in a move that will also facilitate the adoption of 5G, the network gear maker said on Monday.


The agreement means that Telecom Italia's new network will integrate Cisco's latest router technology, enabling a 100 gigabit IP connectivity particularly important to support the growth of video traffic.

The investment is part of TIM's 3-year plan for 2017-2019, and involves spending roughly 5 billion euros to speed up the implementation of national ultra-broadband (fibre and 4G) coverage.

TIM aims at extending ultra-broadband to 99% of fixed-network homes by the end of 2019 and over 99% of the population with 4G.
