ABB: vessel reaches North Pole with Azipod propulsion

(CercleFinance.com) - Today, ABB announced that the Le Commandant Charcot, a polar exploration cruise vessel with ABB's Azipod propulsion, reached the geographic North Pole on 6 September, becoming the 1st hybrid vessel to accomplish this feat.


ABB says that its Azipod technology “produces minimal noise and vibrations to provide a comfortable passenger experience”. “Moreover, the ship's energy storage system, supplied and integrated by ABB, is the largest ever delivered to a vessel of its kind at almost five megawatt hours, allowing the engines to be switched off for silent, emissions-free cruising”.

Equipped with numerous measurement instruments and science laboratories, Le Commandant Charcot offers a platform for observation, research and analysis for scientists all across the world, allowing them to study remote areas by regularly collecting data in these zones.
