ABB: signs big order in South Korea

(CercleFinance.com) - ABB announces a major order for converter stations for the Jeju Island power grid in South Korea.

Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), the country's largest electricity supplier, has awarded ABB Power Grid a big order for the construction of two new converter stations.

One station, found on the mainland, converts AC power into DC power and transfers electricity by submarine cable to Jeju Island. The other station reconverts the current into alternating current for distribution.

The HVDC converter stations will provide an additional 200 megawatts (MW) to the island, providing electricity for 500,000 homes.

South Korea is committed to reducing its carbon dioxide emissions by 37% by 2030.
