Rio Tinto: agreement for solar energy in Queensland
(CercleFinance.com) - Rio Tinto announces that it has signed two new solar-battery hybrid service agreements (HSAs) with Edify Energy to increase the supply of reliable, competitively priced electricity to its aluminum facilities in Gladstone (Queensland, Australia).
Under the agreements, Rio Tinto will purchase 90% of the electricity and battery storage capacity generated by the Smoky Creek and Guthrie's Gap solar power plants for 20 years.
Edify Energy will build, own and operate the projects, with construction starting in late 2025 and completion in 2028.
Located in central Queensland, the Smoky Creek and Guthrie's Gap solar power plants will together have 600 MWac of solar power and 600 MW/2400 MWh of battery storage.
These agreements are key to reinvigorating our aluminum operations in Gladstone with affordable, reliable, low-carbon energy for decades to come," commented Kellie Parker, Rio Tinto's Managing Director for Australia.
