Siemens Energy: chosen by Rolls-Royce for SMRs

(CercleFinance.com) - Siemens Energy announced on Friday that it had been selected by the UK's Rolls-Royce to supply technologies for the latter's Small Modular Reactor (SMR) project.


Under the terms of the agreement, the German group will become the exclusive supplier of steam turbines, generators and other ancillary equipment for the manufacture of these modular, mobile reactors dubbed 'Generation 3+'.

According to Siemens Energy, these 'mini' nuclear reactors can be commissioned more quickly than conventional power plants, thanks to a standardized concept.

Their output could reach up to 470 megawatts, equivalent to enough power to supply some 1.1 million homes.

"SMRs are seen as a promising technology for the future of nuclear power, and a key element in the success of the energy transition", says Siemens.

The group refers to equipment that is 'more compact, safer and more economical' than current nuclear power plants.

The final terms of the contract are expected to be finalized by the end of the year.
