Orange: joint venture with Vodacom in Congo-Kinshasa
(CercleFinance.com) - Orange and Vodacom announce the creation of a joint venture to improve mobile network access in rural areas of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
This innovative partnership will set up solar-powered mobile base stations to serve remote and sparsely populated areas.
With this investment, the two companies aim to provide network coverage to 19 million people, while promoting access to mobile telecommunications and financial services.
Orange and Vodacom plan to build 2,000 solar base stations equipped with 2G and 4G technologies over a period of six years. The first phase of the agreement covers 1,000 sites, after which Orange and Vodacom may consider extending the project with a further 1,000 towers.
Completion of this transaction remains subject to the approval of administrative, regulatory and competition authorities.
