Alphabet: UK CMA to investigate Google
(CercleFinance.com) - The UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) announced on Tuesday that it plans to investigate the online search activities of Alphabet's main subsidiary, Google.
The CMA says it wants to determine whether the services offered by the American Internet giant are of a nature to satisfy UK citizens and businesses.
According to the competition authority, Google accounts for over 90% of Internet searches in the UK, with a customer base of over 200,000 advertisers.
Given the importance of search as a key digital service for users, businesses and the economy, it is crucial that competition works properly", the CMA stresses.
The Competition and Markets Authority plans to carry out its investigations over a period of nine months, before making a decision on the progress of its work in October.
This is the first investigation launched by the antitrust agency under the regulation of companies with strategic market status, which came into force on January 1, 2025.
