Goodyear: Dunlop brand sold to Japan's Sumitomo
(CercleFinance.com) - American tire manufacturer Goodyear announced Tuesday evening that it has sold its Dunlop brand to the Japanese conglomerate Sumitomo, a deal that will bring in over $700 million in cash.
The agreement covers all trademarks, intangible assets and part of the intellectual property required to market Dunlop tires.
Under the terms of the agreement, Goodyear will now use the Dunlop brand under a license granted by Sumitomo for the distribution of truck tires.
However, the Akron, Ohio-based group will retain the rights to the Dunlop brand for the distribution of motorcycle tires in Europe and Oceania.
The agreement also stipulates that Goodyear will supply Sumitomo with Dunlop tires for Europe under a five-year transition agreement.
The transaction, which follows Goodyear's recent strategic review, is expected to close around mid-year.
The Group plans to use the funds to reduce debt and finance its transformation plan.
