S. Department of Labor reported 220,000 new jobless claims for the week ending December 9, down 22,000 on the previous week.
The four-week moving average - more representative of the underlying trend - came in at 225,500, up 1,250 on the previous week.
Finally, the number of people receiving regular benefits fell by 5,000 to 1,874,000 in the week to December 2, the most recent period available for this statistic.
