Renault: 14% lighter doors thanks to Constellium
(CercleFinance.com) - Constellium announced on Thursday that, as part of a partnership with Renault, it had developed an aluminum automotive door that is 14% lighter than those currently used in electric vehicles.
The collaboration, which also focused on closed-loop recycling technologies, also enabled the component's global warming potential (GWP) to be reduced by 33%.
Concluding in 2021, the French R&D project 'ISA3' focused on the development of durable aluminum doors for the automotive sector based on Constellium's new-generation '6xxx' aluminum alloy, which combines formability, corrosion resistance, crash energy absorption and recyclability.
In addition to Constellium and Renault, the program involved the digital simulation and virtual prototyping specialist ESI Group, the Welding Institute and the University of Lorraine.
