Shell: out-of-court settlement reached with Greenpeace

(CercleFinance.com) - Greenpeace announced on Tuesday that it had reached an out-of-court settlement with Shell following the organisation of a protest on one of the energy company's platforms.

Under the terms of the agreement, the Greenpeace protesters in question have agreed to stop campaigning on four Shell North Sea fields.

The NGO stresses, however, that these are sites where production is declining, which will not - in its view - prevent it from campaigning on other oil company production sites.

Also as part of the settlement, the protesters - from whom Shell was claiming $11m in damages and legal costs - have also agreed to pay £300,000 pounds in the form of a donation to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), a charity that saves lives at sea.

Greenpeace - which considers Shell's lawsuits to be a form of SLAPP (strategic lawsuit against public participation) - points out that it is still the subject of other lawsuits 'in intimation', notably from the American Energy Transfer following protests conducted on its Dakota-based pipeline in 2016.

The organisation is also being sued in Italy and the Netherlands by energy group Eni.
