STMicroelectronics: cooperation with Ampere in SiC

(CercleFinance.com) - STMicroelectronics announced on Monday that it had signed a long-term agreement to supply Ampere, the Renault group's electrical unit, with components made from silicon carbide (SiC).

This strategic cooperation, which will begin in 2026, will involve the supply of silicon carbide power modules for the inverter power systems that will equip Ampere's electric motors.

These power modules, made up of numerous silicon carbide chips, manage and convert the electrical energy from the battery to power the motor, they explain.

They play a crucial role in the efficiency of the electric motor, battery autonomy and energy regeneration, making them a key element in the efficiency of an electric car.

They also contribute to driving flexibility and responsiveness.

STMicroelectronics and Ampere say they have designed a power system with an optimal performance/size ratio, with the aim of deploying it across Ampere's range of electric vehicles.

It will equip vehicles with 400-volt batteries and C-segment electric vehicles with 800-volt batteries, the latter technology expected to pave the way for charging a battery from 10% to 80% in less than 15 minutes.
