BAE Systems: begins to make HMS Sheffield
(CercleFinance.com) - BAE Systems announces that construction of HMS Sheffield, the fifth City-class frigate, has begun at the Govan shipyard in Glasgow.
This marks a key milestone for the Type 26 program, which supports nearly 6,000 jobs in the UK. The Minister for Defence Procurement, Maria Eagle, underlined the importance of these vessels for national protection and British economic development.
These frigates, designed for anti-submarine warfare and air defense, can also transport humanitarian aid and accommodate medical facilities.
The first four ships are in various stages of fabrication or outfitting, with HMS Glasgow due to enter service in 2028.
