Unilever: towards alternative ingredients for its products
(CercleFinance.com) - FMCG giant Unilever announced on Tuesday that it had entered into a partnership with Nufarm, an Australian crop protection specialist, to develop alternative raw materials for the manufacture of its personal care products.
The Anglo-Dutch group says it wants to work with Nufarm on the design of "seeds of the future" to grow biomass rich in fatty acids, essential ingredients in the manufacture of its detergents and cosmetics.
While vegetable oils from sunflower and rapeseed are found in the seeds and fruits of plants, Unilever says it wants to use the entire harvest of products such as cane sugar and sorghum with this technology.
In a press release, Unilever stresses that it intends to devote 'several million euros' to this investment, pointing out that it is still aiming to achieve carbon neutrality in its supply chain by 2039.
At present, the supply of raw materials alone accounts for some 52% of its greenhouse gas emissions.
