Waga Energy: launch of a new project in Québec

(CercleFinance.com) - On Monday, Waga Energy announced the launch of a new biomethane production project in Quebec.

In a press release, the company states that it will build and operate a purification unit using its patented technology at the Hébertville-Station site, which serves 50 municipalities.

This system transforms the biogas generated by waste into biomethane, a renewable substitute for fossil natural gas.

The equipment is expected to produce up to 55 GWh of biomethane per year, equivalent to the consumption of 2,280 homes, while avoiding the emission of around 10,000 tonnes of CO2 per year.

The Hébertville-Station storage site can receive 203.500 tonnes of organic waste per year, the decomposition of which produces biogas that will be captured and burned by a flare.

Once the unit is up and running, scheduled for 2026, this biogas will be purified and injected into Energir's natural gas distribution network, supplying renewable energy to homes and businesses in the region.

The project's feasibility study received funding of 300,000 Canadian dollars (200,000 euros) from the French Ministry of the Economy, Innovation and Energy.

This project is in line with Quebec's objectives and its 2030 Green Economy Plan (PEV), which aims to integrate 10% biomethane into the gas grid by 2030.

This is the fifth biomethane production project undertaken by Waga Energy in Canada, following those in operation at Saint-Étienne-des-Grès (Quebec) and another under construction in British Columbia.
