Rio Tinto: round-table discussion on the former Panguna mine
(CercleFinance.com) - Rio Tinto, Bougainville Copper Limited (BCL) and the Autonomous Bougainville Government (ABG) announce the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to create a roundtable to address the impact and consequences of the former Panguna mine (PMLIA).
Based on two years of data collection overseen by a steering committee, an independent assessment has revealed environmental and human issues.
The roundtable is committed to consulting affected communities and establishing a redress mechanism aligned with the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.
Kellie Parker, Managing Director of Rio Tinto in Australia, reaffirmed the company's commitment to working with local stakeholders towards sustainable solutions.
