Rio Tinto: new 25 MW solar power plant at Kennecott
(CercleFinance.com) - Rio Tinto announces the construction of a new 25 MW solar power plant at its Kennecott site in Utah, bringing the mine's total solar capacity to 30 MW.
Following the installation of an initial 5 MW solar power plant (completed in 2023), the new facility is expected to reduce Kennecott's Scope 2 emissions by 6%, or around 21,000 tonnes of CO₂ per year, Rio Tinto estimates.
'Together with other measures already taken, such as the closure of a coal-fired power station, the deployment of underground electric vehicles and our recent transition to renewable diesel, we have reduced our emissions by millions of tonnes in recent years,' says Nate Foster, managing director of Rio Tinto Kennecott.
