Rio Tinto to test automated battery exchange
(CercleFinance.com) - Rio Tinto announces its collaboration with China's State Power Investment Corporation (SPIC) to test battery exchange technology on electric trucks at the Oyu Tolgoi mining site in Mongolia.
The two-year project will involve eight mining trucks (91-tonne payload), thirteen batteries (800 kWh) and a robotized battery exchange station, all in non-productive surface operations.
This initiative will enable Rio Tinto to test an electric truck ecosystem with increased flexibility and less downtime compared to static charging solutions.
The first trucks will be delivered in 2024, and the entire system will be operational by mid-2025, supporting Rio Tinto's goal of achieving net zero emissions for scopes 1 and 2 by 2050.
