GE Vernova: studies sustainability of Saudi Arabian power plants

(CercleFinance.com) - GE Vernova and Saudi Arabia's Ash Sharqiyah Operations & Maintenance Company (ASHOMCo) announce the completion of three front-end engineering design (FEED) studies aimed at reducing net carbon emissions from three power plants in Saudi Arabia.

GE Vernova evaluated pre-combustion and post-combustion technologies on plants powered by its 7E and 7F gas turbines, generating up to 920 MW of power and 1400 tonnes/h of steam.

According to GE Vernova, the 7E and 7F gas turbines can already operate today with up to 100% hydrogen mix with modifications to the standard burners.

Studies have also looked at solutions to enable operations using mixtures of natural gas and hydrogen, with hydrogen accounting for up to 32% by volume in these three power plants.

Retrofitting power plants to capture up to 95% of CO2 emissions has also been studied. The integration of the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system could reduce the total cost of a carbon capture plant by more than 7%, as well as operational costs by 6%, estimates GE Vernova.

Rob Hayes, Executive Director of ASHOMCo, stressed the importance of this study in meeting stringent carbon emission standards and promoting sustainable energy solutions.
