Veolia: a seawater desalination project in Morocco

(CercleFinance.com) - Veolia and the Kingdom of Morocco have signed a memorandum of understanding to set up a strategic partnership for the exclusive development of a seawater desalination project, which will be the largest in Africa and the second largest in the world.

The project will help secure drinking water supplies in regions of the Kingdom particularly hard hit by drought.

Located near Rabat on the Atlantic coast, the project will involve the construction, financing and 35-year operation by Veolia of a seawater desalination plant.

With a capacity of 822,000 m3 of drinking water per day, or 300 million m3 per year, it will supply the Rabat-Salé-Kénitra and Fès-Meknès regions, covering the water needs of almost 9.3 million inhabitants.

Estelle Brachlianoff, Veolia's Managing Director, commented: "We are fully aware of the urgency of the situation and proud to contribute to this major project, which will strengthen the country's water resilience.
