Alstom: driverless train delivered to India

(CercleFinance.com) - Alstom announced on Thursday the delivery of the first driverless trainset for the second phase of the Chennai metro in India.

The contract is for the supply of a total of 108 carriages, to be manufactured at Alstom's production site in Sri City (Andhra Pradesh), in the south-east of the country.

This order from Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), for which manufacturing began in February 2024, aims to deliver a total of 36 trains, each comprising three carriages.

The project, valued at E124m, also includes the training of Chennai Metro staff in the operation and maintenance of the trains.

Equipped with automatic operation and automatic train protection systems, these metro trains are designed to operate without a driver at speeds of 80 km/h, or even 90 km/h.

These trains - designed to run on a 26 km corridor with 28 stations, including 18 elevated and 10 underground - are intended to transport Chennai's 11 million-plus inhabitants.
