Sanofi: agreement with Orano in new radiotherapies

(CercleFinance.com) - Sanofi announced on Thursday that it had signed an agreement with Orano, the former Areva, to join forces in the field of new-generation internal vectorized radiotherapies ('radioligands' or RLT).

The companies say that they plan to invest in a new entity under the Orano Med brand, Orano Med's oncology subsidiary, dedicated to the discovery of new radiolabeled therapies based on lead-212, an alpha emitter.

Under the terms of the agreement, Sanofi will take a 16% stake in the new entity, valued at E300m and worth E1.9bn.

Targeted alphatherapy combines the ability of biological vectors to target cancer cells with the cell-destroying potential of alpha emitters within a limited radius of action.

The vector directs the radioisotope towards cancer cells expressing the targeted marker, with the aim of damaging, or even destroying, cancer cells while limiting the impact on surrounding healthy cells.

This agreement follows the announcement of an exclusive licensing agreement between Sanofi, Orano Med and RadioMedix to advance RLT in the field of rare cancers.
