Thales: ESA orders six new radar satellites

(CercleFinance.com) - Thales Alenia Space announced Wednesday that it has signed a 107 million euro contract with the European Space Agency (ESA) to supply six additional radar satellites for the Italian Earth observation constellation.

The joint venture between Thales (67%) and Leonardo (33%) states that, under the new contract, it will manufacture a total of 13 satellites for the 'Iride' constellation, comprising 12 small satellites equipped with synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and one satellite featuring optical technology.

The Italian 'Iride' space program, launched at the initiative of the Italian government and financed as part of the national stimulus plan, is scheduled to enter service in 2026.

The project will combine several types of technology, including low earth orbit (LEO) satellites and ground infrastructure (downlink segment).
