Mastercard: towards more advanced identity verification
(CercleFinance.com) - Mastercard announced on Tuesday that it will be offering more advanced technology to enable merchants to verify the identity of their customers online.
With the implementation of the new 'EMVCo' standards, the credit card issuer says it will soon be able to attest additional data such as the cardholder's age, date of birth or address.
This system, backed by the payment card and its partners, will make it possible to reliably ensure that a consumer meets the required criteria for certain goods and services, such as the purchase of alcohol.
For the time being, Mastercard says it intends to focus on a few European countries such as France, the UK and Germany, but plans to expand into other markets in 2025, which has already led it to work with certain governments and organizations.
