Deutsche Bank: may be interested in Commerzbank

(CercleFinance.com) - Deutsche Bank could be interested in Commerzbank and is likely to appoint Morgan Stanley as advisor, according to Bloomberg, following information from La Republica.

The Italian daily indicates that Deutsche Bank would be one of the few players able to oppose UniCredit, as Invest Securities pointed out this morning.

UniCredit announced at the end of September that it had increased its stake in Commerzbank from 9% to around 21%, following the acquisition of financial instruments.

UniCredit is now Commerzbank's largest shareholder, ahead of the German state.

According to analysts, this surprise announcement confirms the speculative appeal of the Commerzbank dossier, even if many continue to point to the uncertainty surrounding the timing of a possible transaction.

UniCredit itself is keeping its intentions vague, explaining that it sees potential value creation in Commerzbank, whether it remains independent or moves closer to UniCredit.

As highlighted in a recent report by the European Commission, UniCredit believes that a strong banking sector is key to the continent's economic success, it said.
