Rio Tinto completes phase 1 at its Diavik diamond mine
(CercleFinance.com) - Rio Tinto announces that it has completed development and construction of phase 1 of the A21 underground mine at its Diavik diamond mine in Canada, enabling commercial production.
Phase 2 of the A21 underground project was approved earlier this year with an additional investment of US$17 million. The project will enable Diavik to maximize the value of its known resources until closure.
Construction of the A21 underground mine required the development of more than 1,800 meters of underground tunnels to access the deposit and begin underground production.
Rio Tinto reports no lost-time injuries after more than 100,000 man-hours over 20 months of development and construction work.
