Lockheed Martin: signs $297m contract with NASA

(CercleFinance.com) - NASA has signed a contract with Lockheed Martin to design and build next-generation GeoXO Lightning Mapper (LMX) instruments for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
The new instruments will help forecasters monitor severe weather events.

The base contract is valued at approximately $297m for two instruments, with options for two additional instruments.

The LMX instrument detects and measures lightning onboard NOAA's next-generation GeoXO weather satellites. This lightning data will provide persistent observations of severe weather in the Western Hemisphere, improving storm analysis and forecasting, and facilitating the detection of tornado-generating thunderstorms, it says.

This advanced technology will give meteorologists a tool to more quickly alert the public to severe thunderstorms and dangerous weather situations such as rapidly intensifying hurricanes, Lockheed Martin adds.
