BMW: Steyr plant uses biomass energy
(CercleFinance.com) - The BMW Group has announced that the Steyr plant, its Austrian engine manufacturing site, is no longer using natural gas, but heat from a nearby biomass power plant.
Milan Nedeljkovic, BMW's board member responsible for production, and Arnold Schwarzenegger symbolically commissioned the new energy source.
The BMW Group's Steyr plant consumes around 250 gigawatt-hours of energy per year, the equivalent of 59,000 households. In recent years, energy consumption has fallen steadily: 'Since 2006, we have managed to reduce the amount of energy used per engine by almost half', says Klaus von Moltke, Plant Manager.
Milan Nedeljkovic, BMW AG board member responsible for production, said: 'We optimize the carbon footprint of all our production sites worldwide, using innovative technologies and the potential of the local region to generate energy from fossil-fuel-free sources.
