Rio Tinto: biofuel project in Australia

Rio Tinto will develop Pongamia seed farms in Australia as part of a new biofuels pilot project. The project will explore the potential of Pongamia seed oil as a feedstock for renewable diesel.

The pilot project aims to determine whether Pongamia seed oil can help meet Rio Tinto's renewable diesel needs while potentially contributing to the growth of a new biofuels sector in Australia.

Rio Tinto is in the process of acquiring around 3,000 hectares of cleared land near Townsville in northern Queensland.

Rio Tinto said that Australia does not yet have a sufficient biofuels industry to meet domestic demand. A sustainable biofuels industry could enhance the region's energy security, create local economic opportunities and contribute to emissions reduction targets.
