Ericsson: joins MSSA to develop connectivity
(CercleFinance.com) - Ericsson has announced its membership of the Mobile Satellite Services Association (MSSA), an industry initiative to advance direct-to-device (D2D) and IoT services via space-based networks.
This effort brings together an ecosystem of non-terrestrial network (NTN) providers with the aim of extending mobile coverage on a global scale.
Ericsson recognizes the growing interest in 5G non-terrestrial networks (NTNs). Current mobile networks cover less than 40% of the earth's surface, or less than 12% of the globe.
'NTN 5G networks, which use 3GPP standards, could extend coverage via satellites, enabling conventional 5G devices, such as smartphones, to maintain service even when moving from a covered to an uncovered area' says the group.
' With MSSA, Ericsson aims to advance the goal of ubiquitous connectivity through the integration of terrestrial and space-based networks', says Freddie Södergren, head of technology and strategy at Ericsson's Business Area Networks division.
The integration of non-terrestrial networks (NTNs) with terrestrial cellular networks has the potential to improve mobile coverage and connection reliability on a global scale.
