Nexans: E170m contract awarded in Scotland
(CercleFinance.com) - Nexans announced on Monday that it has been awarded a E170m contract by UK-based SSEN-T to supply a cable for a transmission link to the remote Orkney Islands region of Scotland.
The French group reports that the agreement covers the manufacture and installation of a high-voltage alternating current (HVDC) cable that will link the archipelago to the mainland.
Laid between Finstown, in Orkney, and Dounreay, in the Scottish region of Caithness, this infrastructure will be approximately 69 km long, including 53 km of submarine cable and 16 km of land cable.
The interconnector - which will be able to transport up to 220 MW of renewable energy - will strengthen the UK electricity grid, supplying the north of Scotland and surrounding regions.
The terrestrial section of the interconnector cable will be manufactured at the Nexans plant in Halden (Norway), and the submarine section in Charleroi (Belgium), while accessories will be produced in Cortaillod (Switzerland).
Installation of the interconnector is scheduled for 2027.
