Infineon: new, more efficient GaN chips unveiled
(CercleFinance.com) - Infineon announced on Wednesday that it had become the first chipmaker to use a new, wider and therefore more efficient wafer type for its gallium nitride (GaN) products.
The German group reports that it has succeeded in large-scale production of gallium nitride (GaN) power semiconductors using 300 mm wafers.
Compared with the 200 mm wafers currently in use, this technology will enable Infineon to increase its production of GaN power semiconductors by a factor of 2.3, for applications ranging from industrial and automotive applications to solar and AI.
Infineon, which specifies that these new wafers were developed at its Villach site (Autiche), says it expects this market to be worth several billion dollars by 2030.
At around 3.20 pm, Infineon shares were up 0.5%, while the DAX gained 0.4% and the European technology stock index climbed 2%.
