Apple: forced by the EU to pay E13 billion to Ireland

(CercleFinance.com) - The European Court of Justice today confirmed that state aid granted to Apple by Ireland was 'illegal'.

The ruling concerns tax benefits enjoyed by Apple Sales International (ASI) and Apple Operations Europe (AOE) from 1991 to 2014.

In 2016, the European Commission ruled that these advantages, resulting from favorable tax rulings issued by Ireland, constituted 'state aid incompatible with the internal market', requiring Ireland to recover around E13 billion in illegal tax benefits.

In 2020, however, the General Court of the European Union annulled this decision. The Court has now annulled the latter ruling, definitively settling the dispute and confirming the Commission's original decision.

As a result, Apple will have to pay Ireland some E13 billion in unlawful tax benefits.
