Ryanair: EU orders repayment of state aid

(CercleFinance.com) - The European Commission yesterday concluded that three German support measures for Ryanair and Frankfurt-Hahn airport had breached EU rules on state aid.

Germany will therefore have to recover around E14 million in illegal aid, including interest, from Ryanair, and E1.25 million from Frankfurt-Hahn airport.

The investigation revealed that the return of a plot of land to Frankfurt-Hahn airport without compensation, two marketing contracts with Ryanair, and training aid were incompatible state aid.

In addition, the Commission determined that four other measures in favor of Frankfurt-Hahn airport, Ryanair and Haitec AG did not constitute state aid. These measures include purchase contracts, a guarantee, and the construction of a maintenance area, deemed to comply with EU rules or not relevant for assessment.

EU rules stipulate that incompatible state aid must be recovered to restore competition, while small aids, under the de minimis regulation, are exempt from control.
