(CercleFinance.com) - Philip Morris International (PMI) reports that illicit cigarette consumption in the European Union reached 35.
2 billion in 2023, or 8.3% of total consumption, up 0.1 percentage points on 2022.
PMI commends law enforcement agencies for their action against criminal networks, while calling for a data-driven policy approach to protect consumers and public health.
A study also reveals that counterfeit cigarettes account for 36% of the illicit market, with a loss of 11.6 billion euros in tax revenue for the EU, with France the country most affected.
We are witnessing an evolution in organized crime groups in Europe, who are increasingly locating their production sites near Western European countries", says Christos Harpantidis, PMI's Senior Vice President of External Affairs.
