Salesforce: acquires data management firm Own Company

com announced on Thursday evening that it had acquired Own Company, a specialist in data management and protection, for $1.9bn in order to diversify its offering beyond customer relationship management (CRM).

The San Francisco-based software developer says that the operation will not only enable it to strengthen its activities in data security, but also in product confidentiality and compliance.

Own Company's portfolio will notably consolidate its existing range in data backup (Salesforce Backup), encryption (Shield) and protection of additional types of data (Data Mask).

This acquisition reflects the accelerating interest of companies in solutions that help them avoid data loss, whether due to human error, system failure or cyber-attack.

Salesforce points out that Own Company, which had been one of its technology partners since 2012, currently boasts nearly 7,000 customers.

The transaction, financed entirely in cash, is expected to be finalized during Salesforce's Q4, i.e. from this November to January next year.
