Nestlé: use of paper packaging intensifies

(CercleFinance.com) - Nestlé announced on Monday that it plans to intensify the use of paper packaging in the manufacture of its products, following the discovery of a series of innovations in this field.

Designed by research teams at its Nestlé Health Science Rd&D center in Bridgewater, New Jersey, a cardboard box for its Vital Proteins American brand of dietary supplements has made it possible to reduce plastic use by 90%, says the Swiss food giant.

Nestlé, which already uses paper packaging for confectionery such as Smarties and KitKat, now says it wants to extend its use to coffee, a product that is particularly vulnerable to oxidation and humidity.

In the UK, Nestlé claims to have recently launched a high-barrier paper refill solution for its Nescafé brand, with the aim of enabling consumers to refill their glass jars when they get home.

This system has reduced packaging weight by 97%, Nestlé points out, while facilitating recycling.

In Europe, the Nescafé Cappuccino range is now presented in paper rather than plastic packaging.

In a press release, Nestlé points out that it has set itself the goal of making 100% of its packaging recyclable or reusable by 2025, and of reducing its use of virgin plastics by a third by then.
