Ryanair: capacity reduced by 20% at Berlin airport

(CercleFinance.com) - Ryanair announced on Tuesday that it plans to reduce capacity at Berlin-Brandenburg airport by 20% due to high costs in the country.

The Irish low-cost carrier explains that it intends to eliminate six destinations from the airport, namely Brussels, Crete, Kaunas (Lithuania), Krakow, Luxembourg and Riga, equivalent to some 750,000 seats.

The company says it wants to redirect its capacity to other European countries where taxes on air tickets are non-existent, such as Italy, Poland or Spain.

On the contrary, Ryanair continues, Berlin recently decided to increase its air tax by 24%, even though the company had asked for it to be abolished.

Ryanair also denounces the poor management of the airport, which opened ten years late, resulting in a total cost of 6.5 billion euros, three times more than initially planned.

In its view, the infrastructure is also 'grossly under-utilized' compared with airports in smaller European cities such as Dublin (32 million passengers per year), Manchester (28 million) or Copenhagen (27 million)
