GSK launches antimalarial drug in Thailand and Brazil

(CercleFinance.com) - GSK and Medicines for Malaria Venture (MMV) today announced that tafenoquine, their first single-dose drug to prevent relapses of malaria (P.
vivax), has been launched in Thailand and Brazil, in support of malaria elimination efforts.

P. vivax is the dominant malaria parasite in most countries outside sub-Saharan Africa. The disease is characterized by clinical relapses, with patients falling ill repeatedly unless latent infection in the liver stage is treated.

GSK points out that when used in combination with chloroquine, tafenoquine can treat both the blood and liver stages of the disease.

Today's news underlines GSK's long-standing commitment to the fight against malaria, and we are proud that tafenoquine, co-administered with chloroquine, is now being launched in Brazil and Thailand", said Thomas Breuer, GSK's Global Health Director.
