American Airlines: 100 hydrogen-powered engines to be purchased

(CercleFinance.com) - American Airlines announced today that it has entered into a conditional purchase agreement with ZeroAvia for the purchase of approximately 100 hydrogen-electric engines to power regional aircraft with zero in-flight emissions other than water vapor.


The company recalls that it has increased its investment in ZeroAvia, following an initial investment in 2022, notably participating in the company's Series C financing round. The engine agreement follows the memorandum of understanding announced by the two companies in 2022.

ZeroAvia is developing hydrogen-electric (fuel cell-powered) engines for commercial aircraft.

The company is currently flight-testing a prototype engine for a 20-seater aircraft, and is also designing an engine for larger aircraft such as the Bombardier CRJ700, which American uses on certain regional routes.
