Microsoft: EC sends its list of objections concerning Teams

(CercleFinance.com) - On Tuesday, the European Commission sent a series of objections to Microsoft, which Brussels suspects of potentially abusive practices concerning its Teams collaborative software.

The European executive says it has informed the American IT giant of its preliminary opinion that it had infringed EU antitrust rules.

More specifically, the Commission explains that it criticizes Microsoft for linking Teams to its Office 365 and Microsoft 365 business office suites.

We are concerned that Microsoft could give its own communication product Teams an unfair advantage over its competitors by linking it to its popular productivity suites for businesses, explains Margrethe Vestager, executive vice-president in charge of competition policy.

The Commission had opened an investigation in 2023 following a complaint lodged by Slack, now owned by Salesforce, followed by a second complaint from Germany's alfaview.

The statement of objections is a formal stage in the Commission's investigations, enabling the parties concerned to examine the documents in the file and submit their observations.

In the event of an infringement, the EU can impose a fine of up to 10% of the annual worldwide sales of the company concerned.
