Boeing: heavy loss in Q4, as expected

(CercleFinance.com) - On Tuesday, Boeing reported a heavy loss for Q4, which it attributed to exceptional charges linked to the recent strike by its machinists and to the 777 and 777X programs.

The world's second-largest aircraft manufacturer, behind Airbus, posted a net loss of $3.86bn, or $5.46 per share, for the last three months of the year, compared with a loss of just $30m (four cents per share) a year earlier.

These results, which take the annual net loss to over $11.82bn, come as no real surprise after the warning issued by the group last Friday.

In detail, the civil aircraft division posted an operating loss of $2.09bn in Q4, based on sales that slumped 55% to $4.76bn.

Boeing says it delivered just 57 commercial aircraft in the last three months of the year, compared with 157 in the same period of 2023.

Over FY 2024, its aircraft deliveries totalled 348 units, compared with 528 in 2023.

Boeing's defense business reported an increased operating loss of $2.27bn, compared with a shortfall of "just" $101m a year earlier, with quarterly sales down 20% to $5.41bn.

The group has not provided any forecasts for FY 2025.

Following this publication, Boeing shares were down slightly (-0.1%) in pre-market trading on Tuesday.
