Daimler: Mercedes-Benz's green car sales triple in 2020

(CercleFinance.com) - Mercedes-Benz met European CO2 targets for passenger cars in 2020 as the luxury-car brand tripled its global sales of hybrid and electric vehicles last year.

The Daimler unit said on Friday that it sold over 160,000 plug-in hybrids and all-electric vehicles worldwide in 2020, which corresponds to a 228% leap year-on-year.

Mercedes said demand for "green" vehicles increased sharply, especially towards the end of the year, as it sold about 87,000 units in the fourth quarter alone.

According to internal forecasts, the car brand estimates that it achieved the European CO2 targets for passenger cars last year.

In all, Mercedes-Benz sold 2,164,187 vehicles last year, down 7.5% from 2019. Hybrid and electric vehicles now represent 7.4% of its sales, up from from just 2% the previous year.
