USA: household confidence better than expected (UMich)
(CercleFinance.com) - Consumer confidence improved more than expected in December, according to the preliminary results of the University of Michigan's monthly survey published this Friday.
The confidence index compiled by the Midwestern institution rose to 74 this month, after 71.8 in November and 73.3 expected by economists.
While the sub-index measuring the evolution of their expectations worsened to 71.6, from 76.9 last month, the sub-index assessing their judgment of their current situation jumped to 77.7, from 63.9 in October.
Joanne Hsu, the report's author, attributes this surge to an improved outlook for durable goods purchases, against a backdrop of falling inflation expectations, with Republican sympathizers expecting Trump's forthcoming return to the White House to result in a 'huge slowdown' in inflation.
