Solvay: biomass replaces coal at Rheinberg

(CercleFinance.com) - Solvay announces the official inauguration of a second biomass boiler at its soda and bicarbonate plant in Rheinberg (Germany), eliminating the use of thermal coal at the site.

With the commissioning of this new boiler, the Rheinberg site becomes the world's first soda ash plant fueled by locally sourced residual wood.

The site's biomass boilers will reduce the plant's annual CO₂ emissions by 65% compared to 2021.

This cogeneration technology, with an efficiency of more than 90%, will thus contribute to a 5% reduction in Solvay's overall emissions by 2025, the company assures.

'The end of coal at Rheinberg is a major step in our global energy transition,' confirms Philippe Kehren, Solvay's CEO.
