Eni: 1st carbon capture and storage project in Italy

(CercleFinance.com) - Eni and Snam announce the start of CO2 injection activities into the reservoir of phase 1 of the Ravenna CCS project.

Designed to support industrial decarbonization, Ravenna CCS is the first permanent CO₂ capture, transport and storage project in Italy created exclusively for environmental purposes.

Phase 1 of the project involves the capture, transport and storage of CO₂ emissions from Eni's natural gas processing plant at Casalborsetti, in the municipality of Ravenna, estimated at around 25,000 tons per year.

Once captured, the carbon dioxide is transported to the Porto Corsini Mare Ovest offshore platform via repurposed pipelines. The CO2 will then be injected and stored at a depth of 3,000 meters in the depleted Porto Corsini Mare Ovest gas field.

The project is already reducing CO₂ emissions from the Casalborsetti plant stack by over 90%, with peaks of 96%.

Claudio Descalzi, Eni's CEO, said that CO2 capture and storage is an effective, safe - and now available - way of reducing emissions from energy-intensive industries whose activities cannot be electrified. From renewable energies to biofuels, from CCS to sustainable chemistry, we are committed to providing our customers with a variety of solutions, with constant attention to the economic competitiveness and level of real demand of businesses that need energy to operate.
