J&J: Covid-19 vaccine could be available in early 2021

(CercleFinance.com) - J&J expects to initiate clinical studies of a potential COVID-19 vaccine at the latest by September, with first batches that could become available for emergency use in early 2021, the US healthcare giant said on Monday.

Johnson & Johnson said that it has identified a lead vaccine candidate from constructs it has been working on since January, and that it is now moving on an accelerated timeline toward Phase 1 human clinical trials.

With clinical data on safety and efficacy expected to be available by the end of the year, the move could allow vaccine availability for emergency use in early 2021, the drugmaker said.

In comparison, the typical vaccine development process usually spans 5 to 7 years, before a candidate is even considered for approval.

With the rapid scaling of its manufacturing capacity, J&J said it could aim at providing global supply of more than one billion doses.
