Meta: record E1.2bn fine

(CercleFinance.com) - The Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC), a body responsible for enforcing the fundamental right of individuals in the EU, has announced that it is imposing an administrative fine of E1.
2bn on Meta Platforms, Facebook's parent company, for continuing to transfer the personal data of its European customers to the US, despite the adoption of the RGPD, Europe's General Data Protection Regulation.

After a thorough investigation, the DPC found that even though Meta Ireland had made these transfers on the basis of updated standard contractual clauses ("SCCs"), these provisions could potentially infringe on the fundamental rights and freedoms of data subjects.

In addition to the administrative fine, the CPO requires Meta to cease transfers of personal data to the US within five months of the notification of the CPO's decision to Meta Ireland, i.e. 12 October 2023.
