Norsk Hydro: update on situation at Brazilian plant

(CercleFinance.com) - Norwegian aluminium producer Norsk Hydro accidentally spilt diluted caustic soda into Brazil's Canal Velho during heavy rainwater last month, the company said on Tuesday.

According to the preliminary findings of a review on the group's Alunorte alumina refinery after the flooding, diluted caustic soda was released inside the plant due to a power failure, which then entered the waste-water holding pond, with overflow into the canal.

Hydro also cited a discharge of water overflowing from the adjacent waste-water holding pond into the internal open drain, Canal Velho.

In addition, an inspection detected cracks in a pipeline, leading effluent from a deposit area to the water treatment station.

Hydro has said that the public prosecutor of Para has ordered it to take action within 48 hours, which includes repairing the cracks and blocking the entrance to Canal Velho.
