AstraZeneca: British regulator backs vaccine

(CercleFinance.com) - The UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) said on Thursday that the public should continue to receive AstraZeneca's vaccine, saying that its benefits far outweigh the risks.

Reacting to its suspension by several European countries because of potential blood clots, the British medicines authority confirmed that the benefits of the vaccine in preventing the virus "far outweigh" the risks.

People should therefore continue to go for the Covid-19 vaccine when asked to do so, the MHRA said in a statement.

The MHRA says that of the 11 million doses of AstraZeneca's vaccine distributed in the UK, only five potential cases of thrombosis have been reported to date.

By comparison, the vaccine reduces the risk of hospitalisation and death from Covid by 80%, it said in its statement, citing a thorough and careful review of the data collected.

The AstraZeneca share is underperforming the market by about 0.5% in London at the time of writing.
